Almost every online school advertises “video lessons.” Far fewer are honest about the difference between a pre-recorded course library and a live class with a real teacher — and for STEM subjects specifically, that difference matters more than most parents expect.
The case for pre-recorded content
Recorded lessons have real advantages: a child can pause, rewind, and rewatch a tricky explanation as many times as needed, and families can fit learning around any schedule. For straightforward, well-sequenced content — a maths procedure, a vocabulary lesson — this works well.
Where it breaks down for STEM
STEM subjects are rarely linear. A child working through an algebra problem, a chemistry concept, or a piece of code will hit a specific point of confusion that a generic video simply can’t respond to — because it was recorded before that child ever asked the question. Multiply that across every student watching the same video, and you get a lot of quietly stuck kids nobody notices.
A live teacher, by contrast, can see the confusion happen in real time, ask a clarifying question, and adjust the explanation on the spot. That responsiveness is difficult to replace with any amount of production quality.
Why the answer isn’t “either/or”
The strongest setups we’ve seen — and the model we use — combine both: a live class to introduce and troubleshoot concepts in real time, followed by self-paced practice, worksheets and projects that let a student consolidate what they’ve learned at their own speed. The live component catches confusion early; the self-paced component gives the repetition STEM mastery actually requires.
A useful question to ask any online school: “If my child gets stuck on a Tuesday afternoon, who actually notices, and how quickly?” The answer tells you a lot about whether you’re looking at a real school or a video library with a login page.
