A lot of “STEM curricula” for young children amount to a science worksheet bolted onto an otherwise ordinary syllabus. A genuinely good one looks quite different — here’s what to actually look for.
It treats STEM as one connected way of thinking, not four separate subjects
Science, technology, engineering and maths reinforce each other constantly in the real world — measuring an experiment is maths, building a model is engineering and design, and recording results with simple code is computing. A strong primary-age curriculum blends these together in projects rather than teaching them as four unrelated boxes on a timetable.
It starts with a question, not a fact
“Why do some things float and others sink?” invites a child to investigate. “Objects float due to buoyancy” invites a child to memorise a sentence. The best early-years STEM teaching leads with the question and lets the child arrive at the explanation through hands-on investigation.
It’s hands-on by default, not as an occasional treat
Watch out for programmes where “hands-on activities” are a once-a-term special event rather than the normal way lessons run. For young children especially, physically doing something — building, sorting, measuring, testing — is how abstract concepts become real.
It builds toward something, deliberately
Early STEM learning should be visibly laying groundwork for what comes later — pattern recognition that becomes algebra, simple coding blocks that become programming logic, guided experiments that become the scientific method used at IGCSE level. A curriculum without that throughline tends to feel disconnected once a child hits secondary-level content.
It still protects literacy and communication
A narrow STEM focus that neglects reading, writing and clear communication does children a disservice — engineers and scientists still need to explain their thinking clearly. The strongest programmes keep English and communication skills developing in parallel, not as an afterthought.
In short: look for connected subjects, question-led lessons, genuinely hands-on work, a clear long-term throughline, and strong literacy alongside it — not just a science-themed worksheet pack.
